Are you looking for a pet or would you like to learn more about the one you already have? Breeders are professionals you can trust in the vast majority of cases. But how can you tell a good breeder from one who is less than ideal?
The conscientious breeders’ code of professional conduct!
Member of the Canadian Kennel Club
Active members participate actively in competitions, discussions and decisions of the Canadian Kennel Club. Also, if applicable, they are active members of their respective breed clubs looking to constantly improve the breeds that they work with.
Honesty
Because they participate regularly in conformation competitions and have produced champions themselves, they are well aware of standards for the breed they raise. They will provide you with the dog that corresponds to what you’ve seen and read. Such a breeder will never try to convince you that a flaw is an asset and does not offer “small,” or “large” animals, “new colours” or “new breeds.”
Health guarantee
These breeders are dedicated to delivering puppies that have received at least one series of vaccinations against the major contagious diseases. Their concern for only breeding dogs with good conformation is in and of itself insurance that your dog will not have conformation problems. Through appropriate veterinary controls for their breed, they ensure that a dog’s parents are healthy. What’s more, they will provide you with a written guarantee concerning serious hereditary problems.
Animal protection
For these passionate individuals, a dog is not just merchandise. Dogs are not a business! This mindset guides them as they raise their dogs, either at home with them or in a kennel specially designed for their breed. Breeders want their dogs to live in the best possible environment to maintain their physical and psychological health as best as possible.
Follow-up
Conscientious breeders make it a point to re-contact you to ask whether you are satisfied. They will help you find solutions to the various minor problems you will experience in training your puppy. They will give you tips if the dog is sick. They are very knowledgeable about your dog’s genetics, don’t hesitate to ask for their advice!
